- Get a spam filter and anti-virus software
- Learn how to use the web the right way
- Know what to do when you find inappropriate pictures/text
- Think before you send or post
- Never give anyone passwords (except for your parents)
- Never meet someone in person who you met online
- Always set up privacy settings for websites such as facebook
- Be careful of which sites you enter
- Be aware of what files you download (including email attachments)
- Stay in touch with your parents so they know what’s going on
- Never give out any personal information (ex. last name, your address, telephone number, parents' place of work or their phone number, or location of your school)
- Never send anyone your picture - don't accept any pictures either.
- Report any harassment or inappropriate messages to parents, teachers, the online service or to the police
- Don’t say anything embarrassing to strangers
- Ask your parents before you sign up for any networks or chat room on the internet (facebook, myspace etc.)
- Be nice to the people you meet on the internet and other websites, always remember the golden rule. Never say anything that you might regret later or is inappropriate.
- Treat your online footprint (blog, facebook, etc) like a resume.
- Make sure your comments and feedback are kind, specific, helpful comments
